Falls and injury
Falls are the leading cause of hip fractures
in the elderly.
- Approximately 1.6million hip fractures occur worldwide each
year.
- Nearly 75% of these hip fractures occur in those over 65 years
of age.
- Loss of function and independence among survivors is profound,
with 40% unable to walk independently and 60% requiring assistance
a year later.
- Over 20% of those who suffer a hip fracture die within 12 months.
- Increased levels of care mean increased costs.
