Falls and injury
As we age the risk of falling increases, often
as a result of medical conditions which cause difficulties with
balance and mobility such as:
Stroke
Poor vision
Heart problems
Arthritis
Parkinsons disease
Injuries can also be caused by slips and trips
in the home and while out and about.
Falls are one of the leading cause of injury related
hospital admissions and ACC statistics show that last year alone
more than 70,000 people aged 65-plus needed medical treatment as
a result of a fall. Those over 65 years old have a one in three
chance of falling this year, with the risk increasing to one in
two for those over 80 years old.
As we get older, a fall can take much longer to
recover from and often will result in a loss of mobility and function.
With the higher level of ongoing nursing and/or family care that
is usually required, the increased costs and major change in lifestyle
can be devastating.
The good news is that Impactwear® Hip Protectors,
which have been researched, developed and manufactured in New Zealand
for over 10 years, have been specially designed to help prevent
a fall related hip fracture. These protective garments are used
and recommended by many individuals as well as residential facilities,
public and private hospitals and medical specialists throughout
NZ.
